These are traditions associated with the family and friends type party. During the candle lighting, usually 17 (16 + 1 for good luck) candles the Sweet 16 can recognize friends and family that have had an impact on her life while remembering those that have passed.
The changing of the shoes is done, by the Sweet 16’s mother and father, to signify the transition into adulthood.
The dance with the father is a special moment for both father and daughter as Dad realizes his little girl has grown up.
